PART ONE by Oliver Foreman added 3 March 2010

Derby has been without a bus station for about three years. The previous 70+ year old structure has been demolished and the brand new one is due to open on 28 March 2010. I thought we could use this page over the coming weeks for photographs, links and comments about the old and the new.

For starters, I have added four photographs below of the new bus station taken on 2 March 2010, less than four weeks before its opening. There was a solitary Arriva driver training bus on one of the bays and all the roadways and lane markings appeared nearly complete with workmen carrying out finishing touches. The interior of the grand building, to contain waiting areas, shops and, I think, a casino, seemed to be far from ready, however.

I hope to add some photographs soon of the current chaos in the streets around as the bus drivers do their best to pick up on the crowded stops.

PART TWO by Oliver Foreman added 6 March 2010

First of all, a correction. There are in fact 29 bays. Bays 25 to 29 are for coaches and are constructed differently (see first photograph below) presumably to make it easier for using side luggage lockers.

Now a comment. It is good to see trouble has been taken to make a large bus station with cars kept away from reversing buses, and with some room for buses to park on layover (none of this is the case at the rebuilt Nottingham Victoria Bus Station). However, is it big enough? Being a resident of Mansfield I looked HERE to see where I will board the Trentbarton 'Nines' for Mansfield, only to find it appears they are not going to use the bus station! Will I go to the bus station bay 4 for the hourly Black Cat or head off along Corporation Street for the four per hour 'Nines'? (Actually I think the best option is to get the Red Arrow to Nottingham and then the Pronto.) Similarly, people for Ripley and Alfreton (also served by the 'Nines') will have to decide whether to trapse the length of the bus station to bay 21 for the Chesterfield bound Red Arrow (soon to be two an hour), or walk in the opposite direction along the main road for a 9.1, 9.2 or 9.3. I find this disappointing.

Finally, here are some photographs taken on Friday afternoon 5 March 2010. The first shows bays 25 to 29 for coaches (still under construction). The temporary offices and information kiosk may be seen in the second picture. The others show random buses around the temporary terminii in the roads close to the bus station. Although busy, everything flowed fairly easily.

Watch out for more photographs following the bus station opening on 28 March!

Dennis Basford comments (added 7 March 2010):

I have just read the second part of your Derby Bus Station piece.

As a Ripley resident I, like you am disappointed with the 9's services being left out of the bus station.

Personally, I think it may be deliberate to separate the 9's from the Red Arrow.

Over the last 3 years there have been complaints at the bus stop where passengers for stops North of Alfreton have missed the Red Arrow because the buses have been full of people alighting at Kilburn Toll Bar, Ripley and Alfreton.

The new arrangement will mean that people will have to decide which bus to catch and not just get on the first to turn up.

On a more general note, I think that Trentbarton have generally disappointed Ripley travellers on the 'Nines'. It's only recently that we have got 4 buses an hour with the small Solo. While other routes like Allestree and Mickleover get eight buses an hour with Solos and Volvo B7's respectively.

Even during the day the Solos on the Nines are simply not big enough. At busier times they are full to capacity. It's galling to see routes like the 1A with Scanias with moderate loadings.

I also feel that putting more coaches with four steps on the Red Arrow is a backward step in these days of disability discrimination. The route surely cries out for a dedicated fleet of low floor single or even double deckers. See my suggestions at the bottom of THIS PAGE. Oliver

Anyway, enough from me. What turned out to be a comment on Derby's new bus station finished up as a bit of a rant. Sorry about that !!

Richard Lomas comments (added 9 March 2010):

I don't agree with Dennis Basford about the Nines. I travel from Ripley to Derby reasonably often and have always found a seat since the service was increased to every 15 mins. The service is better than when I moved to Ripley in 1967 when it was a Fleetline every 20 mins.

I have been left in Ripley by full Red Arrows travelling northwards but this should be solved when the 30 min headway starts. Incidentally the new Irzars will have wheelchair lifts but I'm not sure how practical they will be.

I too am disappointed that the Nines, H1 and Amber Circle will not be using the new bus station. I am not surprised that X38 and Harlequin won't be using it. X38 was taken out of the old bus station because of a tight schedule.
