The July meeting of the Society took the form of a visit to the former TM Travel yard at Staveley where several preserved former
Chesterfield Transport vehicles (together with other preserved vehicles) are currently kept. There were several former Chesterfield
vehicles which arrived at the Town Hall to convey members and friends in convoy to the premises at Staveley. These were: 225 LRB,
ENU 93H, NNU 124M, E64 WDT and finally J216 AET and so a choice was offered as to which vehicle to travel in. On arrival at Staveley,
members had the opoportunity to look at the work currently being done on former Chesterfield Atlantean 114 (PNU 114K) which, after
languishing at Butterley for a number of years, is now undergoing restoration. Another vehicle of interest was Van Hool bodied Leyland
Tiger FRN 816W which has recently been purchased by Transpire member, David Kelly. This is an historically important vehicle, being
used by Leyland in publicity and sales drives when the Tiger was launched and progress on its restoration was noted. It
is hoped that this vehicle will be back on the road before too long. Other vehicles on site included an Ex Bristol Leyland Lynx
(F611 RTC) undergoing restoration and another Van Hool bodied Leyland Tiger in the livery of Mulleys Motorways (B42 ECV). The
afore mentioned ex Chesterfield vehicles had now been joined by JRA 635, the Leyland Tiger PS1, now owned by Tim Watts and also
kept at Staveley and the vehicles were lined up down a nearby cul de sac for photographers. Member Nathan Cartwright had brought
his friend from university along, Jono, and he chose the vehicle for the next stage of the trip, chosing the oldest one, JRA 635
and so a near full load enjoyed a trip around the new relief road at Staveley before travelling via Barrow Hill to the Arkwright
Arms where a welcome refreshment break was taken.
Thanks are expressed to the owners of the preserved vehicles used or viewed on the night, in particular Tim Watts, The Chesterfield
123 Preservation Group, Neil Jones, Paul Hopkinson, Lee Roddis, Chris Corroy, Tony Stacey, Shayne Howarth, David Kelly, Dennis Vickers,
Steve Rush and John Bird for making the evening so enjoyable.
